Barnsley attracted more than 4.09 million visitors in 2025, according to the latest tourism figures released by Barnsley Council. The visitor numbers represent a 3.8% increase on 2024, while spending in local businesses rose 8.2% to £431.21 million.
The STEAM data shows that day trips accounted for most visits, with 3.49 million day visits recorded during the year. Overnight visitors also contributed to the local economy, with many choosing to stay with friends and family in the borough.
Spending patterns and business impact
Shopping was the largest contributor to visitor spending, accounting for 41% of the borough's total economic impact. Food and drink businesses generated 26.8% of the total, showing strong performance across the hospitality sector.
Barnsley Town Centre recorded more than 9 million visits during 2025. The visitor economy directly supported 2,521 full-time equivalent jobs, up 0.8% compared to 2024.

Councillor David Goddard, Cabinet Support Member for Environment and Communities, said: "These latest figures are fantastic news for Barnsley and show that more people are choosing to spend time in our borough. The growth in visitor numbers and spending is helping to support local businesses, create jobs and strengthen our economy."
