Firefighters were called to a large fire at a scrapyard in Carlton, Barnsley, on Saturday evening. The blaze broke out at a site on Boulder Bridge Lane and involved quantities of scrap metal and tyres.
At its peak, South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service deployed 10 engines, an aerial ladder platform and a number of operational support vehicles to the scene. Footage shared on social media showed huge plumes of black smoke billowing across the sky.
Road closure and advice
South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service advised people living nearby to keep their windows and doors closed due to the smoke. Boulder Bridge Road was closed as a result of the fire and drivers were told to avoid the area if possible.
Crews were expected to remain at the scene for the remainder of Sunday. In an update at 13:15 BST, the service said Boulder Bridge Road would be closed for several hours.
