Four of Barnsley's green spaces have been awarded the Green Flag Award, the internationally recognised standard for parks and green spaces. Elsecar Park and Local Nature Reserve, Cannon Hall Parklands, Locke Park, and Carlton Marsh Nature Reserve all met the highest standards in management, cleanliness, safety, accessibility and community involvement.
The awards mark the 30th year of the Green Flag scheme. A record-breaking 2,391 parks and green spaces across the UK achieved the award this year.
Success Stories Across the Borough
Elsecar Park and Local Nature Reserve continues its long-standing success with its 19th Green Flag Award. The site features beautifully maintained grounds, a community events programme and connection to the historic Elsecar Heritage Centre. It includes a scenic lake, gardens and recreational facilities.
Cannon Hall Parklands has retained the award every year since 2020. One of the most visited free attractions in England, it attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors annually with family trails, a fairyland experience, walled gardens and open parkland.
Locke Park, spanning 47 acres just a mile from Barnsley town centre, has achieved its second Green Flag Award after receiving its first accreditation last year. The park features an iconic tower, bandstand, café and bowling club.
Carlton Marsh Nature Reserve has been recognised for its strong focus on conservation and biodiversity, providing a haven for wildlife while showcasing sustainable land management practices.

Cllr Paul Kelly, Cabinet Spokesperson for Environment and Highways, said the awards recognise the quality of Barnsley's valued green spaces and reflect the dedication of the Parks Team, volunteers, Countryside Rangers, Museums and Neighbourhoods Teams.
