Free weekly gambling support groups will start in Barnsley this week, offering residents local access to confidential peer support for the first time.
The groups begin on Tuesday 20 October at Barnsley YMCA and Goldthorpe Library. Barnsley Recovery Connections is running a 12-month pilot programme with government funding, providing three support group meetings every week.
Who can attend and how it works
The sessions are free and open to anyone over 18. There is no need to book in advance, and people can join at any time. Although the groups are organised in 12-week blocks, participants can drop into whichever session fits their schedule.
Each meeting provides a confidential space for people to talk openly about gambling, share their experiences and receive practical support. Peer support can help with recovery and wellbeing, as well as build confidence and encourage continued access to help.
Why this matters locally
Until now, Barnsley residents have had to travel outside the borough to attend gambling support groups. The launch of these sessions makes support much more accessible.
Cllr Stan Bryan, Cabinet Spokesperson for Adult Social Care and Integrated Health, said: "I'm pleased that support groups for gambling are now available in Barnsley. These new groups mean people can get free, confidential support closer to home. They will offer a space for people to talk openly and get practical help."
Finding further support
More information about the support groups is available on the Live Well Barnsley website. Those seeking clinical support for a gambling problem can find information on the NHS Northern Gambling Service website.
