Community volunteers in Hemingfield are launching a Community Speed Watch project to tackle speeding and improve road safety in the village.
Hemingfield Action Group is running the scheme in partnership with the Hoyland, Milton and Rockingham Ward Alliance, which has funded the initiative. Local volunteers have completed South Yorkshire Police Community Speed Watch training and will carry out regular speed monitoring sessions.
The project will initially focus on Tinglebridge Lane and Cemetery Road, following concerns raised by residents about speeding in those areas.
How the scheme works
Volunteers will use specialist equipment loaned to them to monitor vehicle speeds. The Community Speed Watch scheme is designed to educate drivers and encourage compliance with speed limits rather than issue penalties.
The initiative will gather information to support wider efforts to improve road safety across the village.
Community awareness campaign
Households across Hemingfield will receive information about the project and specially designed speed awareness wheelie bin stickers. Residents are being encouraged to display the stickers as a visible reminder to drivers to reduce their speed when travelling through residential areas.
Councillor Sam Burdett, Cabinet spokesperson for Communities, said: "We know that speeding is something residents are concerned about, so it's great to see the community coming together and taking positive action. This project is about encouraging everyone to think about their speed and helping to make our roads feel safer for people who live, walk and travel through the village."
Ian Warhurst, Chair of Hemingfield Action Group and Ward Alliance Representative, added: "Residents have told us they are concerned about speeding in parts of the village, and through the support of the Ward Alliance and the commitment of our volunteers, we are able to take practical action."
