A new heritage totem has been unveiled at Elsecar Railway Station to celebrate the area's history and guide visitors to local attractions. The three-dimensional artwork is located behind Platform 2 near Hill Street and was designed by artist Patrick Murphy.
The totem features weathered Corten steel and includes community-selected imagery such as the historic Newcomen Engine, Elsecar Park and swans nesting along the nearby canal. It also incorporates an integrated bee and insect hotel to support biodiversity.
Community input shaped the design
The project was created through a partnership between South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority (SYMCA), Barnsley Council, Northern and local partners. Residents, volunteers and pupils from Elsecar Holy Trinity CE Primary School helped influence the final design through extensive community engagement.
The totem was jointly funded by SYMCA, Barnsley Council through its Pride of Place programme, and Northern. It was installed in June 2026 and officially unveiled in July 2026.
Cathrine Ashworth, Community Rail Officer at SYMCA, said: "Projects like this demonstrate what can be achieved when partners come together around a shared vision. By involving local people from the very beginning, we have created something that celebrates Elsecar's heritage, encourages visitors to explore the area and provides lasting benefits for the community."
Councillor Sam Burdett, Cabinet Spokesperson for Communities at Barnsley Council, said: "This is a fantastic example of how local people can help shape projects that celebrate the places they are proud to call home. Elsecar has a unique story, rich industrial heritage and strong community spirit, and this new totem brings those elements together in a way that will be enjoyed by residents and visitors alike."
Future station adoption scheme planned
The installation is part of wider work to strengthen connections between the railway and local destinations, making it easier for people to access heritage, culture and green spaces by train. Partners are encouraging local people to get involved in the future of Elsecar Station through a station adoption scheme, which could include projects such as artwork, planting and heritage displays.
