Two new Good Food Pantries have opened in Barnsley, offering affordable food to residents in Gawber, Grimethorpe and surrounding areas. The pantries are located at St Paul's Parish Hall in Gawber and at Grimethorpe Library, both run by volunteers from the local community.
The pantries are open to all residents and stock everyday food essentials. For £5 per shop, customers can pick up a range of quality store cupboard items. The scheme helps reduce food waste while providing access to affordable food in a welcoming community setting.
Growing Network Across Barnsley
The opening of the Gawber and Grimethorpe pantries brings the total number of Good Food Pantries across Barnsley to 12. Councillor Stan Bryan, Barnsley Council's Cabinet Spokesperson for Adult Social Care and Integrated Health, said the expansion shows what local communities and volunteers can achieve together.
"Not only does it provide access to affordable, nutritious food for local residents, but it also creates opportunities for people to connect and support one another," Councillor Bryan said.
The council acknowledges that some residents use the pantries because they are struggling with the cost of living.
