Amy's Cards is celebrating 60 years of trading on Barnsley Market. The family-run stall, located in Barnsley Indoor Market, held a celebration on Saturday with customers and former staff surprising current owner Sharon Wreakes.

The stall has been selling greeting cards, balloons and party accessories since 1966, and serves thousands of customers each year.

Three generations of ownership

Amy's Cards was originally owned by Amy Wainwright, who ran the stall for 31 years from 1966 to 1997. The stall then passed to her daughter Anne, who looked after the business for 20 years. Sharon Wreakes, granddaughter-in-law to original owner Amy, took over in 2017 and continues to run the stall alongside her sister-in-law Emma and staff member Joan.

Fundraising for local causes

Across the six decades, Amy's Cards has raised funds for charities including Barnsley Hospice and the Royal British Legion through displays, themed stalls and fundraisers.

Recognition for the market

Matt O'Neill, Executive Director for Place, said: "It is a fantastic achievement for Amy's Cards to reach six decades of trading on Barnsley Market. The stall is proudly positioned in the centre of our award-winning Indoor Market and has an incredible history of trading."

Barnsley Indoor Market was named Best Large Indoor Market at the NABMA Great British Market Awards 2026.
