Barnsley Council has approved a new plan to create 48 extra places for children who have been excluded from school and need specialist education outside mainstream provision.
The Alternative Provision Strategic Partnership will support up to 144 pupils each year. The initiative focuses on creating places within the Barnsley borough so children and young people can access support closer to home.
What is alternative provision?
Alternative provision supports children and young people who need extra help outside of mainstream school. The new places will provide education alongside additional support to build confidence and improve attendance. They will also help children and young people prepare to return to mainstream school or move to their next stage of education.
Who will deliver the service?
Following consideration of available options and completion of appropriate assurance and due diligence, Delta Academies Trust was identified as the council's preferred partner to deliver the education objectives and outcomes.
Council backing for the scheme
Councillor Gary Hall, Cabinet Spokesperson for Children's Services, said: "Every child should be able to get the right education and support when they need it. These places will help children and young people to feel more positive about learning and, where possible, return to mainstream school. This is part of our commitment to making sure every child has the chance to do well."
