Berneslai Homes has become the first local organisation to launch a 'Careers in a Box' role play resource, created in partnership with Amazelab and Barnsley Council's Primary Careers Hub.
The resource is designed to help primary school children explore different job roles in an interactive way. It will be loaned out to primary schools across Barnsley as part of the council's Great Childhoods Ambition.
What's in the Box
The Berneslai Homes box contains interactive activities, problem-solving tasks, and short videos from staff in various roles within the housing sector. These include a lettings officer, gas engineer, planning officer, and plasterer. Children take part in real-life tasks linked to each role to understand what the job involves and how it contributes to the working world.
Why Early Careers Education Matters
The Primary Careers Hub supports schools with careers-related learning. It allows children to explore the world of work in an age-appropriate way, building confidence and aspirations as they grow.
Councillor Gary Hall, Cabinet Spokesperson for Children's Services at Barnsley Council, said: "Early exposure to careers is powerful. By the age of six, many children have already formed ideas and stereotypes about the jobs available to them. It's great to see local businesses and organisations helping children see a wider world of opportunities and inspiring them to aim high."
