Elsecar Heritage Centre is hosting a series of free talks, performances and exhibitions as part of Heritage Open Days, England's largest festival of history and culture.
The programme runs throughout Heritage Open Days and explores the people, places and industries that shaped South Yorkshire. One of the main highlights is Remember the Coal, a performance by Alan Wood and John Snook celebrating South Yorkshire's mining communities through song, storytelling and personal memories. A special open-air performance of Remember the Coal will also take place at nearby Hemingfield Colliery.
Exhibition at RSPB Old Moor
Created in partnership with RSPB Old Moor, an exhibition will explore how the Dearne Valley changed from a centre of industry into an important place for wildlife and conservation. The exhibition runs from 12 to 20 September at RSPB Old Moor, alongside displays from Hemingfield Colliery, Wentworth Woodhouse, Doncaster Archives and Wombwell History Group.

• The story of a local First World War nurse
• The heritage of Wentworth Woodhouse

• Remember the Coal performance

Thanks to the hard work of staff, volunteers and partner organisations, this year's programme brings local history to life and gives people of all ages the chance to learn more about South Yorkshire's rich heritage."
