Four Barnsley College bricklaying students have been selected for Newett Homes' first apprenticeship scheme.
Charlie Shaw, Brayden Gilman, Wayne Kamhuka and Jack Stott were chosen following interviews with more than 30 college students, according to the housebuilder's announcement.
The programme began in September and is designed to combine formal qualifications with practical experience on residential construction sites.
College training and site experience
The apprentices will work towards their Apprenticeship Standard in Brickwork over two years. Their college work will run alongside training with Newett Homes and its brickwork contractors.
The company's partners for the scheme are Bond Brickwork, Clover Brickwork, and Matthews and Robinson Construction. Applicants were shortlisted to 10 before the four successful students were selected.
Site training is expected to cover stages of house construction from foundations through to completion, including bricklaying, jointing, stonework and associated practical tasks.
Newett Homes chief executive Will Newett said the programme was intended to give young people formal training, mentoring and experience as they begin careers in construction.
Andy Watson, apprentice construction manager at Barnsley College, said the partnership would enable the students to put their learning into practice while working towards their qualifications.
First intake
The four students form the first intake of the housebuilder's new scheme. The announcement does not set out a further application window, so this is news of their selection rather than a current recruitment advert.
The programme was announced in a release dated 17 September. Further company information is available from Newett Homes.
