More than 8,700 children and young people took part in free activities across Barnsley during the summer holidays. Barnsley Council worked with 31 local partners to deliver 451 free activities, providing 1,143.5 hours of sport, outdoor adventure, arts, crafts and large community events.
The activities were designed to help children and young people stay active, try new things, build confidence and make memories during a time when affordable activities can be hard to find for families.
What activities were on offer
The range of activities included sport, outdoor adventure, arts and crafts experiences, as well as large community events. Feedback from participants was overwhelmingly positive, with young people reporting that they tried new things, spent time with friends, learnt new skills and enjoyed days out.
Family response
Parents also reported that the activities helped their families. One parent said: "Kids in Barnsley need these opportunities, thank you so much. It's been brilliant support for the whole family."
Barnsley's Great Family Festival
A highlight of the summer was Barnsley's Great Family Festival, which took place in the town centre on Saturday 22 August. The event brought together partners including the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority, The Glass Works, Barnsley Libraries, Base71, Barnsley Family Hubs and Barnsley Civic. Families enjoyed free activities, live entertainment and hands-on creative experiences.
Cllr Gary Hall, Cabinet Spokesperson for Children's Services, said: "Every child and young person in Barnsley should have the chance to learn, grow and thrive. This summer, I'm pleased that thousands of children and young people have had the opportunity to take part in activities, try something different, grow in confidence and make memories that will stay with them."
