Funding boost to help more Barnsley residents walk, wheel and cycle

Barnsley residents will benefit from a £468,000 funding boost over three years to support walking, wheeling and cycling programmes, Barnsley Council has announced.

The funding has been accepted from the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority (SYMCA) to continue and develop active travel initiatives. The investment aims to help people of all ages build more activity into their daily lives and choose healthier ways to travel.

Programmes to be supported

The funding will sustain and expand several existing projects across the borough:

Barnsley Bike Works helps residents access cycling through bike maintenance, repairs and practical support. Ramp Up gives children and young people the chance to try BMX riding and scooting using supervised sessions with provided equipment. School walking and cycling programmes encourage children, families and staff to walk, cycle or wheel for everyday journeys. Wellbeing walks and themed children's walks support physical activity, wellbeing and community connection.

Wider health strategy

The investment builds on Barnsley's Active in Barnsley Physical Activity Strategy, which identifies walking and cycling as important tools for helping residents become more active and enjoy healthier lives.

Councillor David Goddard, Cabinet Spokesperson for Environment and Transport, said the funding allows the council to continue delivering programmes already helping people across Barnsley become more active. "Being active looks different for everyone," he said. "For many people, small changes such as walking to school, cycling to work or taking part in a local wellbeing walk can make a real difference to their health, wellbeing and confidence."

Councillor Goddard added that the projects help residents access affordable travel options, reduce reliance on the car and support more sustainable ways to get around the borough.

Delivery timeline

The three-year funding package will support delivery across schools, workplaces and communities throughout the borough until March 2029. The funding comes at no additional cost to Barnsley Council.
